Excavations in the fortress-castle of Tap

Since October 15, 2024, within the framework of the program for strengthening and restoring the outbuildings, excavations began in the Tap fortress. It is located 6 km northeast of the village of Urtsadzor in the Ararat region of the Republic of Armenia, on the right bank of the Khosrov river, on the hill of the northwestern outskirts of the ancient settlement of the Urts.
The expedition of the Scientific Research Center of Historical and Cultural Heritage (head of the expedition: Mary Safaryan) is carrying out cleaning works and partial excavations of areas attached to the inner side of the southern and eastern walls of the fortress.
In the corner of one of the rooms of the outbuilding, remains of plastered floor and wall plaster have been preserved.
Fragments of karrases (very big jugs) decorated with convex belts, various storage containers, jugs and bowls, and pieces of elegant vessels with red polishing were found. A part of an oil lamp bottom covered with blue-turquoise monochromatic glaze stands out.
The head of the expedition of the Historical and Cultural Heritage Research Center, Mary Safaryan, details the ongoing excavations in the Tap fortress-castle (10th century).
