The monument “Glory to Labour” (worker’s statue)

The monument “Glory to labour” (better known as the Statue of the Worker) was located in the Shengavit administrative district of Yerevan. It is one of the last monumental works of Ara Harutyunyan, People’s Artist of the Armenian SSR, Honoured Art Worker, Sculptor.
The statue of the worker has been gone for a long time, but for many it remains the best way to navigate the area.
In 1982, “Glory to Labour” or, as it is popularly called, “Statue of the Worker” was installed in the square adjacent to the “Gortcaranain” station of the Yerevan metro.
Later, the square received the name “Worker’s statue square” among the people, and even after the dismantling of the statue, it continues to be called that.
According to the author, the 11-metre cast iron giant represented the image of an Armenian worker walking towards Western Armenia. It had unique dimensional and artistic solutions.
In 1997, the 11 – meter statue was dismantled and dismembered.
In 2004, 7 years after the fall of the “Worker statue” and its disappearance, the dismembered statue was found on the territory of one of the factories in Shengavit. Then the parts of the statue were moved to a private territory under unknown circumstances. The detached head, arms, the fist, legs, the shoe and the back part of the torso have been preserved from the complete statue.
On the 1st of June 2022, the exhibition “Statue of a Worker – Post Scriptum.” was opened in the National Gallery of Armenia, where the statue’s head and fist were shown for the first time 25 years after the statue’s disappearance.
