Lori Fortress, one of the most prominent fortresses of medieval Armenia, is once again in the spotlight. Initiated by the RA Ministry of ESCS and designed by the “Research Centre of Historical and Cultural Heritage” SNCO, unprecedented restoration of the fortress walls and site improvement works are underway.
At this stage, the fortress walls, stretching for hundreds of meters, have been almost entirely restored from the outside. Notably, during the restoration process, the ancient, moss-covered stones were preserved in their original places, and the collapsed sections were filled with new stones, maximally preserving the monument’s authenticity and historical layers.
Thanks to excavations carried out in 2022, new layers were uncovered, and a unique secret passage was discovered. It allowed the fortress defenders to move from the interior onto the walls undetected.
The restoration work will continue for two more years to complete the historical image of the powerful capital of the Kyurikyan dynasty.
