Work on the cleaning and excavation of the cells of the Great Tatev Desert (expedition leader – Arman Nalbandyan) is ongoing.
For years, dozens of structures in the complex were buried and covered with a thick layer of soil. During the excavations, the layer of soil is gradually being removed, revealing plastered floors of the cells and numerous finds. Among these, particularly interesting are oil lamps, various pottery fragments, pieces of glazed ceramics, a wooden spoon and stopper, pieces of leather, as well as shards of glass vessels and many other things.
According to the results of the cell excavations, some of them had practical purpose, while others had spiritual function. Inside some of them, khachkars (cross-stones) are found built into the walls or fallen from them, which are also a novelty for the public.
Quite remarkable khachkars are present on the second floors of the cells.
The excavations are ongoing, awaiting further discoveries.
