The settlement of Areni (a settlement of valiant and brave people, also known as Old Karbi) is located about 2 km west of the village of Karbi, on a small hill. The settlement is completely covered with ruins of residential buildings where streets and courtyards are visible.
Areni is first mentioned in written sources about the rebellion against the Arab Caliphate in Armenia in 774-775. Later, the settlement is mentioned in the wall inscriptions of the main church of Hovhannavank (13th century) and in the wall inscriptions of the monastery of St. Sarkis in Ushi (1329).
In the centre of the settlement there are the ruins of a three-nave basilica (basilica church) built in the 4th-5th centuries. In some places, walls up to 3 m high have been preserved. On the territory of Areni, there are tetrahedral monuments of the 6th-7th centuries, carved khachkars (cross stones), tombstones of the 13th-14th centuries, etc.
At the end of the 16th century, the Armenian population left the settlement and it became deserted.
In 1829, several families settled there, but in 1842 the population left Areni again. The settlement was damaged by earthquakes in Ushi (1264), the Ararat Valley (1679), Tsaghkadzor (1827), and Mount Ararat (Akori, 1840).
